About Me

I’m Lorraine, founder of The Calm Lantern Counselling. I am married, have a grown-up son, and have step-grandchildren. I’m a qualified Person-Centred Counsellor with a BA (Hons) Degree in Person-Centred Counselling from the University of Suffolk, where I achieved a 2:1. During my training, my placement and continuing counselling, I have completed over 400 hours of practical counselling with clients, developing a deep understanding of the counselling relationship and refining my therapeutic skills.

I hold a Level 3 Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling, a Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health, an HNC in Childhood & Youth Studies, and an NVQ Level 3 in Caring for Children and Young People.

I have over 25 years of experience supporting children, young people, adults, and families. I understand how life’s challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming. My approach is calm, compassionate, and person-centred, offering a space where you can explore your thoughts and emotions safely, without fear of judgement.

My background in youth work, emotional wellbeing, and family support has given me a deep understanding of how different experiences shape us. I’m guided by empathy, active listening, and cultural sensitivity, always working within the principles of confidentiality, safeguarding, and respect.

I must declare a personal interest in Autism, as I am diagnosed Autistic and I bring both professional knowledge and lived experience to my work. I understand first-hand how the world can sometimes feel overwhelming, and how important it is to be accepted and supported just as you are. My diagnosis helps me connect deeply with clients who are neurodivergent or who feel different, misunderstood, or unseen.

The name The Calm Lantern reflects my belief that even in our darkest moments, there is always a light to guide us forward. I aim to walk alongside you as you find your own light, helping you rediscover calm, clarity, and confidence.

My Philosophy

At The Calm Lantern Counselling, I believe that everyone has the potential to live a meaningful and fulfilling life. My counselling approach is person-centred, which means I aim to understand your experiences from your perspective. Together, we focus on your own strengths, values, and sense of self-worth to help you move forward in a way that feels right for you.

As a person-centred counsellor, my role is to offer understanding, empathy, and gentle guidance as you navigate your journey, creating a space where you feel truly heard, accepted, and supported.

A Person-Centred Approach

Person-centred counselling was developed by Carl Rogers in the 1930s. He believed that each person has within them the capacity for growth and healing — and that it’s the client, not the counsellor, who truly knows what they need to talk about.

This approach places great importance on the relationship between counsellor and client. Real change happens when you feel genuinely heard, accepted, and cared for. My role is to offer that kind of space, one that allows you to explore your experiences freely, at your own pace, and in your own way.

Person-centred counselling offers time just for you. It’s very different from talking with friends or family. I’m not part of your day-to-day life, so the space is entirely yours — free from expectation, judgement, or the need to please anyone.

In a world filled with noise, stress, and pressure to “fix” things quickly, counselling offers something rare: a quiet, compassionate space where you can pause, listen to yourself, and discover what you truly need.

What Makes Me  Different?

What makes The Calm Lantern Counselling different is the calm, personal approach I bring to every session. I offer a safe, understanding space where you can talk freely and be truly heard. My work is guided by empathy, authenticity, and respect, never by judgment or pressure. I have experience counselling individuals affected by sexual abuse, domestic violence, trauma, and grief, as well as supporting neurodivergent clients, including those with autism and ADHD.

"The Calm Lantern Counselling offers calm, compassionate, and confidential support to help you find clarity, confidence, and a sense of balance in your life."
